Castelo do Bode, Central Portugal

Central Portugal is often referred to as the 'Green Heart' of the country.  This is possibly because of the abundance of Pine and Eucalyptus forests and lush green valleys. The exact boundaries governing Central Portugal isn't clearly defined, mainly due to changing concelhos (districts) by the Portuguese government over recent years. However it roughly covers the following districts  of Santarem, Portalegre and Castelo Branco to the south and Leiria,  Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda to the north.

Chavetejo is based in in the centre of Tomar, a bustling market town famous for it's UNESCO world heritage Castle and Convent, which was built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. In fact the entire region surrounding Tomar has strong links to the Templar knights and there are many castles, convents and edifices, which were founded by the warrior monks, within Central Portugal.

Though our offices may be based in Tomar, we have properties for sale covering a much broader area to the north, east, west and south.

Although many rivers flow through the boundaries of Central Portugal, there are only two major rivers or Rios, which both start and finish within the boundaries of the region and they are the Rios Zêzere and Mondego. These important rivers flow through some of the most significant towns within the region and help to keep it green even in the highest temperatures a Portuguese summer can offer.

The countryside in Central Portugal varies dramatically. The sandy beaches of the Silver and Lisbon coasts are a far cry from the rugged granite peaks of the Serra da Estrela mountains - home of Portugal's only ski resort - to the east.

The flora and fauna in Central Portugal is no less diverse. There is a bountiful range of wild flowers shrub species and trees which are unique to the area including lilies, orchids, curry plant and the evergreen Cork Oak trees.

The country's habitats are a shelter for many mammals such as wolves, the illusive and endangered Iberian Lynx, wild cats, foxes, wild boar, goat, deer, hares and even mongoose.

The region is not only rich in natural beauty but man made monuments as well. There are numerous buildings of historical importance within the Central Portugal region including an impressive number of castles and churches. Three buildings not to be missed are the UNESCO listed Convento do Cristo at Tomar, the convent at Batalha and the historic University at Coimbra.
