February 2013 I completed the purchase of a
house in the Tomar area which was marketed by
Claudia's Chavetejo Imobiliaria .Throughout the
whole process Claudia and her team were fantastic in
their support .
In the beginning when searching for
suitable properties , Claudia always offered clear ,
honest and unambiguous information, on available
properties, and always understood clearly my
specific requirements. There was never any pressure

So now was the time to
buy our dream house in Central Portugal, where to
start, well Google seemed the obvious and soon we
were directed towards

Every question I typed
into Google about living or buying a house in
Portugal seemed to bring us to the same conclusion,
either Chavetejo or Gekkoportugal. After
a final decision making visit to the Silver Coast
and Central Portugal region we decided to look for

Having scrolled and searched through many
websites advertising property for sale in
Portugal, we read about 'Chavetejo' in Portugal
magazine, and gave it a go.
We were impressed by the

Since deciding to
retire early and move to central Portugal eighteen
months ago my wife Jane and I had been in constant
contact with Nicky and Derek at Chavetejo who have
always replied to our emails promptly and answered
all our numerous questions with honesty and
integrity.
Before arrival we drew up a shortlist of properties
to view around the Tomar area and as soon as we
arrived in Tomar we called in to

the Chavetejo office
and met the team, Nicky/Derek and Claudia who was
later to become invaluable when going through the
process of buying our house.
We were taken to view several properties in the
region but unfortunately there didn't seem to be any
that caught our eye, but Nicky and the team told us
to be patient and not to buy something that wasn't
right for us..........No pressure to buy was ever
put on us by Chavetejo, so we waited.
We eventually found "our" house some distance away
from Tomar and although this distance meant we could
no longer deal directly with the Tomar team they
still showed all the enthusiasm and willingness to
work for us in an effort to make the sale as smooth
as possible.
Chavetejo arranged for a Portuguese lady who lived
locally to see us through the daunting task of
getting connected to the utilities and visiting the
various departments where our lack of the Portuguese
language would have proved a big obstacle. On our
behalf this lady has also arranged a builder and
other tradesmen for us and she has now become a firm
friend of ours.
And so to the actual signing at the Notary, where
Claudia as mentioned before became invaluable as she
calmly explained the proceedings and led us through
the procedure until we came out the other end as
proud owners of our bit of Portugal.

When
we first decided to move to Portugal we were really
worried about the logistics of buying a house,
especially as we haven't learnt any Portuguese yet.
However, I corresponded with Nicky at Chavetejo

We
came to Portugal to purchase a house after a few
months of research and expected the process to be
difficult enough, especially with our inability to
speak Portuguese.
However, we were fortunate enough to find ourselves
at Chavetejo in Tomar and all of our fears melted

cam with us to the tax office to get our fiscal
numbers (one hour and 6.80€ each); introduced us to
the very helpful, efficient and English speaking
bank manager, who opened a bank account for us on
the spot (two hours), and only then took us to look
at properties having first made sure the properties
we went to view would meet our personal criteria.
All this with no guarantee that we might buy.
As
it happens we found the perfect property (on day
two) through Chavetejo and the helpfulness, kindness
and efficiency that Nicky,

us to complete our purchase within two weeks of arriving
in Portugal.
We

now after completion nothing has been too much trouble

On our first visit
to Central Portugal we fell in love with the
place and decided to look at rentals,
consequently we met Nicky and Derek of
Chavetejo. They advised us very strongly to
think hard before renting a property isolated in
the countryside as there would be no easy access
to large towns or the city of Tomar .Also there
would be fewer Expats to become friends with or
ask for support or assistance. Unfortunately we
did not listen to their advice and went ahead
anyway.
We found that we were isolated
and there was no easy access to supermarkets,
towns etc as the bus service to outlying
villages seems to have a mind of its own and in
some cases by passes the villages making a car
essential.Also when we
encountered problems with the rental property
there was very little help locally and we relied
heavily on Chavetejo even though the
responsibility for the rental was not theirs.
Consequently we found this experience was
putting us off moving to Portugal on a more
permanent basis.
Fortunately Nicky and Derek
became aware of this and arranged a short rental
for us closer to Tomar. After 12 months renting
in isolation we had a fantastic time in the new
rental and we would like to thank Nicky and
Derek for sorting this out for us and we are
again looking to buy a property in Portugal but
not in the rural parts. These are the places to
have a day out to not to live.
Our advice to anybody new to
renting or buying in Portugal is listen to Nicky
and Derek, they know what they are talking

Whilst visiting friends and with no previous
intention to buy, we found ourselves enchanted with
the area of Tomar and it's wealth of culture and
beautiful surroundings.

Before we moved to Portugal from Somerset in July
2009 we had already researched a large amount of
agents on the internet and quickly found that

Like most people I researched properties in Portugal
on the internet, I found many sites but over the
months leading up to my retirement I ended up just
checking the Chavetejo site. Apart from lots of
useful information and a good layout with good

When my retirement day finally arrived I grabbed my
cash, loaded the car and headed for Portugal. I had

My experience with
Chavetejo has been better than I could ever have hoped

ten months since we moved into our beautiful house
