Whether you enjoy being active or prefer more sedate past-times, here in Central Portugal, there is something for everyone's tastes. The Portuguese are a sporty and adventurous nation which is reflected in the leisure pursuits on offer - from tennis clubs to white water rafting to yoga schools and meditation classes. In general the facilities are very good and you may well find yourself a few new hobbies when you move or purchase a holiday home here.

Football in particular is the favourite sport of the Portuguese and they take it seriously. Nearly every village has a pitch and there are lots of local leagues but it is the spectator sport which is taken to higher levels. During the football season most Portuguese are glued to the television and radio when a match is on, no matter who is playing, though they are loyal to their chosen teams. So don't be surprised if a complete stranger asks which team you support.

Over the past few years a number of 'parque ambiental'  have been installed through-out the country. These parks are great for walks and have a range of facilities for both children and adults including climbing walls, cycle routes, barbecue areas and play equipment. Most local councils produce information booklets each month with an updated list of events and activities on offer for that month within the district. These usually include listings of musical events, what's on at the theatre and up coming festas.

The booklets are normally distributed in local cafes and tourist information centres. In addition to this during the summer district councils normally arrange activities - animáção - for children. These can range from football and tennis schools to courses in sailing and engineering.
